PVJOBS About Us Overview

Mission:

to place at-risk individuals in career-track employment, to advocate for the employment of those at-risk and to provide social services with our partners.

Overview:

PVJOBS (Playa Vista Job Opportunities and Business Services) is a non-profit corporation originally created in 1998 to fulfill a Los Angeles City Council mandate to provide construction employment opportunities for at-risk local residents at the Playa Vista development site. Today, as a result of our advocacy, PVJOBS works with several major construction projects. There are currently more than 90 collaborating community-based organizations (CBOs) providing life skills training to hard-to-serve individuals and making referrals to PVJOBS for employment. Together with our collaborating organizations, PVJOBS provides an array of supportive services to clients to enable their success. All referrals to PVJOBS are input and maintained in a database. As employment opportunities become available, PVJOBS queries the database and makes referrals to employers.

Since most of the employment at the projects we work with is construction trade union affiliated, candidates are prepared for union entry. The Los Angeles/Orange Counties Building Trades Council and the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters are cooperating with this effort. Paying union initiation fees and first month dues can be a barrier to employment, along with the cost of special tools and clothing. PVJOBS makes supportive services available to our candidates to cover those costs. Because our goal is to provide career-oriented employment opportunities, PVJOBS is committed to supplying a minimum of 3000 hours work to each candidate. This is accomplished by re-referral to similar trade work upon contract completion and subsequent lay-off. Often, however, employers are retaining our employers for other projects unaffiliated with projects with which we work. Unions also refer indentured out-of-work PVJOBS candidates to other employment.

To date, PVJOBS has filled over 3,500 construction positions with over 1000 contractors. Though the population we serve can be difficult to service, PVJOBS is experiencing a success rate of 89.5% (candidates who have completed at least 500 hours of work).
